Brightons first ever game in Division 2 was on August 23rd 1958, away to Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park. We lost 0-9, Brian Clough scored 5.
Brian Clough & Peter Taylor joined 3rd Division Brighton on 1st November 1973. The first game with Cloughie in charge drew a crowd of 16, 017, the two previous attendances had been 6417 & 5308.
In that first season he presided over a 4-0 home defeat by non-league Walton & Hersham in the FA Cup 1st round and then 3 days later our record home defeat, 8-2 to Bristol Rovers.
This started a major rebuilding of the team, and by the end of the season a new team had been brought in at a cost of around £200k. Clough was promising promotion in the next season to Chairman, Mike Bamber.
In July 74 it was announced that Cloughie was the new manager of Leeds, a job that only lasted 44 days. Peter Taylor stayed at Brighton.
Brian Clough went on to win 2 European Cups with Nottingham Forest. Peter Taylor laid the foundations for a team that Alan Mullery took to the First Division, including the signing of Peter Ward, before rejoining Clough at Forest.
