History of Brighton v Cardiff

Our biggest win came on March 6 1937 when we won 7-2 against the Bluebirds in front of 10,632 at the Goldstone.

More recently we won 5-0 on Boxing Day of 1978, the previous season having won 4-0 in October. These were the days when 20,000+ at The Goldstone were the norm. The week before the 4-0 thrashing The Albion pulled in a crowd of 28,208 to see the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

Those 2 seasons were among the best times to be a Brighton Fan. Peter Ward was scoring for fun, we missed out on promotion to the top division in 1978 when Spurs & Southampton played out a 0-0 draw on the final day of the Season which meant that both those Clubs went up.

We went up the next season. Albion won the last home game of the season 2-1 against Blackburn Rovers. Some of our promotion rivals slipped up that day, West Ham dropped a point, and Sunderland lost at home to Cardiff.

Those results meant that a win in Newcastle on the last day of the season would guarantee The Albion promotion to the top Division for the first time ever.In front of a travelling Seagull support of 10,000 Nobby Horton, Peter Ward & Gerry Ryan put the Seagulls 3-0 up by half-time. Newcastle pulled one back with 10 minutes to go, but the Albion held on to gain that much deserved promotion.
