But Crofts secured a point when he his 20-yard effort bounced agonisingly over keeper Owain fon Williams after appearing to hit a divot on the Edgeley Park surface.
Poyet said: "That was Crofty at his best. He always gives us something extra, he was quick to react and he got us that late goal.
"Somehow he just knows how to give us that extra bit. Maybe he was a little lucky with the bounce for his goal, but if you don't hit the target in the first place, you don't score."
He added: "Maybe it is a case of two points dropped, I'll have to analyse that later, but this was an important point.
"We've had three away games in the league recently, we've not lost any of those, so let's go home now. We knew it would be difficult defensively, but we dug in quite well, and their goal was unstoppable."
